In february 2021, we initially made a prediction that the show would be renewed for season 3 based on high viewerships at release of the second season (the first episode was watched by 3 million viewers). However, viewership has collapsed from about 2.5 million viewers per episode in the first few episodes to less than 1.5 million viewers per episode after the show took a 6-week break in February.
We initially believe that the drop in viewership was due to the ill-timed break (there were 2.2 million viewers on Feb 8th, but only 1.2 million viewers when the show returned six weeks later on March 28th 2021). However, Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist has averaged only 1.27 million viewers in April and May.
We were eagerly waiting for the audience update for the season finale. Unfortunately, the finale on May 16th 2021 ended up with only 1.2 million viewers.

Renewal chances: 48% (Likely to be cancelled)
Why do we Predict Season 3 Will be Cancelled?
We believe thath Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist is likely to be cancelled without season 3 based on the following factors. We have observed several signals that puts the show at high risk of getting cancelled with no season 3 in 2021-2022.
Viewership is down 34% versus last year: The current season 2 that released early 2021 is trending down in terms of ratings. The current season started strongly – up more than 20% versus last year’s ratings. This was a very positive indication that the show was gaining traction with the audience after a strong season 1 finale. The show started off the new season really well with the return of Zoey’s as she finds out that her work life and personal life has changed quite a bit since her departure. However, after its 6-week break in February/March, viewership collapsed from 2.3 to less than 1.5 million viewers.
The high viewer scores are at risk: The finale of season 1 received stellar ratings, putting a nice end to one of the best-rated new shows of the year. Season 2 started off really well but the latest episodes have received lower ratings. The TVscorecards popoularity score is now down from 91% to 89%, and at high risk of falling further. It is possible that season 2 is starting to lose steam, both in terms of viewership and quality of episodes, which could put season 3 renewal at risk if the trend continues with the season’s finale.
Why Would Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist Get Renewed? (with a Season 3)
The show is highly rated with a 89% TVscorecards score: Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist ended the 2019-2020 season as one of the top-rated shows of the year with a TVscorecards score of 91% (now down a bit to 89%). The season finale in particular ended on a high note with a sad, but powerful last episode: in “Zoey’s Extraordinary Dad”, Zoey wakes up with a feeling that something bad is going to happen. She later finds out that her father is dying from a degenerative neurological disease. The finale received high ratings with a stellar 9.6 IMDB rating.
Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist won the the TVLine the USA Today ‘Save Our Show’ polls: a TVline survey: the poll closed with over 300,000 answers, and it was Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist that led the way for the show that fans wanted the most to see renewed, with 12.7% of the votes. Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist and the Rookie are the two shows that topped USA TODAY’s 24th annual Save Our Shows poll, with 52% of respondents stating they wanted Zoey to come back for season 3.
The show producer is still planning for season 3. Showrunner Austin Winsberg shared with TVline that ““I approached it like we are continuing” for a third season. There are certain things that are answered at the end of the season, and then there are still a few big cliffhangers that we leave open for major storylines in Season 3“. He also stated on May 13th: “We have a really passionate fanbase that really cares about the show. I know we have a lot of internal support at NBC. So I’m cautiously optimistic that good things will happen, but we don’t know yet”
Overall however, we believe that high user scores can only help a TV show get renewed if viewership remains steady or growing. In the case, there are clear signs that Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist is losing viewer at a higher rate than expected (-34% versus last year), putting the show at a high risk of getting cancelled without a season 3.
Renewal/cancellation Status: Cancelled

I LOVEL Zoey’s Ex. Playlist, please renew for S3 and please have Josh Groban on, just once…
The show is ridiculously integrated and idiotic in concept. Only Jane Levy being eye candy and some decent songs being sung very well are what’s keeping the show alive. Also it’s amazing that for being a newly filmed show that no one anywhere is wearing a mask. Very unrealistic in this time period.
This show is the best and most unique show that I have ever seen with my two eyeballs. The show is literallly about a young women named Zoey Clarke that has a father that has a very bad disease and so she goes to get an MRI just to make sure she doesn’t have the same thing her father has. So when she goes into the MRI the doctor puts on music and then theres an earthquake that messes with her mind and makes her see people’s emotions through song and dance. Zoey now needs to go through her days figuring out how to help people because she can literally see there emotions dancing and singing. This show is defention the of a chefs kiss. It also has so many genre’s, musical ,comendy, drama, romance, and so much more. This show definetly needs a season 3 ASAP.
I can tell you why I stopped watching Zoey’s after the February/March break. I was a big fan and was happy when producer Austin Winsberg did many interviews at the beginning of season 2 stating that the love triangle was over because Zoey was 30 and it wasn’t a teen show after all. But then right after the break he starts it up again AND brings in another character to make it a love square. I would have been okay with that and would have just watched things unfold since I enjoyed the show so much (even if I didn’t like the episodes nearly as much), but I’m not going to support a show I no longer like after being blatantly lied to. If you are reading this, Austin, let this be a learning experience for you: if you ever get the chance to run another show, no more lying! You can keep future plotlines under wraps without disrespecting your audience.
Could it possibly be that viewers just want to watch something fun and not be bludgeoned with critical race theory and musical struggle sessions? Just…maybe?
They should definitely do a season 3!!! Best show ever!! Great cast, exceptional storyline and pure entertainment!!
The network screwed up with the long Season 2 hiatus. The episode just before the hiatus was very much an end of series sort of plot. I as tons of other watchers thought it was canceled and done in February. Then I discover in May it was back and started watching again. I think a lot of watchers also thought it was cancelled in February. And the ratings shows it. Before the hiatus respectable numbers. After the hiatus a huge drop in viewers. I like the show but the networks have done just about every mistake they can to be sure viewers are not finding it.
I loved this a show originally. It had great storyline. But Zoey has become silly acting and can’t make up her mind no matter who she hurts. Can’t make up her mind Max or Simon. Would miss Alex singing, but not Zoey. Not good story lines.
Please renew Zoey’s Playlist for another season (number 3)… it returned a bit weaker during the first part of season 2, but I think this was due to the coronavirus? I was amazed that the show was able to continue at all… my thanks to all the cast for what they accomplished! The last part of season 2, though, finished strong! The singing ensembles and story lines all seemed to find their path again… and I am looking forward to where season 3 will go. Thinking positive!!
