NBC’s hit comedy series ‘Superstore’ gets renewed for season 6
Let’s all agree that workplace comedies are the best kind of comedies, and NBC gives the nod to the notion. In a pleasant surprise for the fans, the network announced the renewal of its top-performing comedy show ‘Superstore’ for season 6. The fifth season the show scored 1.1 ratings in adults 18-49 demographic and 3.8 million viewers.
‘Superstore’ follows the antics of a group of employees working at a fictional hypermarket discount store called Cloud 9. The quirky characters find themselves in oft-silly but always hilarious situations as they deal with customers and manage their personal lives.
New season 6 starts Thursday, October 29th, 2020
“Superstore,” where Cloud 9’s unique family of employees work together and share nearly everything about their personal lives as well, returns for its sixth season on Thursday, Oct. 29th (see press release). The renewal comes along top other season renewals including Blacklist’s new season, Chicago Fire’s new season and Chicago Med’s new season.
Superstore Season 5 Recap
The season finale saw Amy played by America Ferrera accepting a new position as Cloud 9’s new Director of Customer Experience and Jonah deciding to leave with her. The development was made in the light of Ferrera departing from the show. Meanwhile, Sandra is shown to adopt Glenn’s 17-year-old former foster son.
What will happen in Superstore season 6?
Since the pandemic situation caused the creators to wrap up the finale differently than they intended, Amy didn’t get the chance to have a proper farewell. She will be returning to shoot the first episode and say a proper goodbye to the audience. We will see Sandra in the mom role, and the show will continue to touch on sensitive issues, including immigration and automation in the retail industry. While the audience will definitely feel a void after Amy’s departure, the gap is expected to be filled with new storylines.
The new season 6 will pick up where season 5’s cliffhanger left off: Amy’s big move is now delayed due to the pandemic. NBC release a quick preview below where we can see Jonah, Amy and Mateo all handling virus protective gear, with Sandra, Marcus and Cheyenne are wearing masks when talking in the stockroom.
Showrunners Jonathan Green and Gabe Miller told TVLine that the first episode will feature the beginning of the pandemic: “taking us through the early months of the pandemic, [before we] gradually catch up to where things are now. We’ll show how all of our characters are handling the uncertainty, the panicky and difficult customers”.
