Production has started for "Queen Sugar" Season 6 with new cast including Tammy Townsend, Paula Jai Parker, Marquis Rodriguez and McKinley Freeman
season 6 is set in New Orleans and will air in Fall 2021 on OWN: Oprah Winfrey Network. Season 6 will continue the direction set by DuVernay to work with an entirely female director team: directors in the new season are still handpicked by DuVernay and include five directors making their television debut.

Previously, the studios had resumed season 5 production in New Orleans at the end of September 2020. Season 5 tackles the year 2020 and the Impact of the Corona virus, the social injustice movement, and the presidential elections on the Bordelon Family and Community.
