Betaal is an Indian zombie horror series that takes place in a remote village. The town becomes an unhealthy war zone when an East India Company officer and his group of zombies attack a group of modern soldiers. The film starts with a group of people revering a spirit that they call the Betaal. An elderly woman touches a Betaal image inside their worship hall. It gives her ideas, suggesting what would happen if Betaal were allowed to exit the tunnel in which it had been trapped since the days of the British East India Company. The spirit warns the public not to let the tunnel open. Outside the town, Mudhalvan, his wife, Shakuntala, and his young daughter, Saanvi, are preparing to turn the local community into a project area for Surya. Mudhalvan has ordered the Commandant that the area be cleared for the construction of a highway in a remote village near Mount Betaal. When the troups got there, Adivasi residents refused to leave their homes and properties. The squad is forcing residents to burn down houses in preparation for the entire community to be demolished. The villagers returned to the entrance of the tunnel, protecting it with ancient weapons and farm implements. Vikram asks that they leave the tunnel entry in order to clarify the development project. When they refused, an official under Mudhalvan, operates a bomb planted near the torch door. The Baaz squad kills everyone except two villagers: a woman named Puniya and her husband, Sarpanch.
After the tunel is cleared, some construction workers went inside to begin work when screams start coming from the tunnel and a single badly injured worker manages to stumble out of the tunnel before dying.
