MacGyver is Cancelled in 2021 without Season 6

MacGyver is facing his toughest challenge yet. The current season 5 is receiving good viewer satisfaction scores (higher than last year’s season). This is a positive sign, but the ratings are down by over 20% versus the ratings at the same point in the previous season 4.

We believe that MacGyver could be renewed based on the following factors

User satisfaction scores are trending up

MacGyver has a loyal fan base that loves the action-packed series. The latest season currently being broadcasted in 2021 (Season 5) scores one of the top TVscorecards popularity score at 85%, which is higher than the previous seasons. This is a good indicator that the viewers from this season will continue watching the show for the rest of the year and for a (potential) new season in 2021-2022.

Many other TV series have seen downward trends in their user scores (probably due to the pandemic’s impact on production schedules) but MacGyver’s performance is in the right direction, episode after episode throughout season 5. This is a good sign that there will be strong interest for season 6 from existing viewers.

Why Would MacGyver Get Cancelled?

We have observed several signals that puts the show at risk of getting cancelled with no season 6. The main factor is viewership which is down by more than 20% versus last year. This is a significant drop and the show is now competing with other networks to keep the lead (Including Shark Tank).

Viewership in the current season is remaining steady, at 4-5 million viewers per episode. We will be watching the trend closely as season 5 unfolds. Viewership is the primary driver of renewal or cancellation of TV series so this does not bode well for next season. If the last episodes of this season continue to show a decrease in viewership, we believe that season 6 would be at risk of getting cancelled.

However, viewership remains steady episode after episode in the first  few months (despite being down versus last year) and user scores are trending up. This indicates based on our analysis that viewership is likely to remain steady. As a result, there is no reason to believe that the current downward trend will accelerate.
